Welcome
Hello. The Shanghai 1938 restaurant opened in January 2007. We are excited about our future in the Champaign-Urbana-Savoy communities. Our goal is to provide excellent food and service in a comfortable setting.

Name
Many of our customers are interested in our name. Shanghai 1938 is a restaurant designed to resemble old Shanghai in the late 1930’s, hence the name Shanghai 1938.

Outstanding Service
Shanghai 1938 Chinese Restaurant is not your ordinary Chinese restaurant. The restaurant opened in January 2007 and provides a comfortable, antique feel atmosphere and creative menu with a variety of specialty foods prepared with high quality ingredients. Fresh seasonal vegetables are obtained from local producers.
We believe a restaurant should provide food that satisfies the taste of the customers. Our menu is based on customer requests along with some popular menu items that although unique to the area are in demand in other parts of the country.

Custom Cooking
Shanghai 1938 also features what is called custom cooking. In your visit to Shanghai 1938, if you see something that is not on the menu, mention it to your server, and our chef will make every effort to accommodate individual tastes and diets, time and ingredients permitting.

Children’s Menu
We value all of our customers, children as well as adults. If you want a child’s portion or your child has a special need be sure to ask your server if the food can be prepared to meet your child’s dietary need(s).  We recommend that you call ahead and point out your dietary need so we can be prepared to meet your dietary needs.

Health Foods and Special Diets
For the diet conscious guest who is watching their fat and cholesterol consumption, you will be glad to know Shanghai 1938 has a Health Food Section. The food in this category is steamed and comes with sauce on the side or no sauce at all. Therefore, a customer can use the sauce according to their needs and desires.
We DO NOT use Monosodium glutamate (MSG) in our cooking. We also serve brown rice in addition to white rice.

Cost
Cost is always a consideration when dining out. We have done all we can to be competitive with other area restaurants. In addition, we strive to serve our food in an upscale pleasant dining environment. We feature a lunch special and special combination platters at extremely competitive prices.
